About Our Athens Building

Our downtown Athens building, located at 244 East Washington Street, showcases both a sense of history and cutting-edge innovation. The back section of the building was built over 100 years ago as part of the Sunday school of First Baptist Church which was located at the corner of Washington Street and College Avenue until it burned in the 1920s. Over the interim years, the building has been home to a travel agency, a finance company, an insurance agency and, of course attorneys’ offices. There have been numerous additions and renovations resulting in a mish-mash of eclectic styles.

After years of dreaming and planning, the partners at TW&A took action. In early 2008, the building was gutted and entirely renovated. In the process the firm was able to recapture 1400 square feet of what had been unused space. Nothing was wasted. Old pine ceiling joists were taken down, planed and now serve as the flooring in the front section of the office. In keeping with the history of the building, the partners invited all those who had spent many hours within its walls to sign a ceiling beam on the third floor. With the help of local architects and designers, TW&A was able to fuse the historic with the innovative.

TW&A is proud of the building and the message it conveys: preserving the past with an eye toward the future. The historic exposed brick walls and wide plank flooring are combined with indirect light, environmental efficiency, cutting edge technology and modernized amenities. Our building beautifully showcases an aesthetically-pleasing complement of old and new.

The building’s renovations were featured in an article in the Athens-Banner Herald.
